Alcohol & Substance Use
Understanding the condition
The consultation is confidential and non-judgmental. The aim is to understand the pattern, risks and readiness for change—not to shame the person or family.
Tell the clinician what is being used, how often, when it was last used and whether there have been withdrawal symptoms. Previous seizures, medical problems and support at home matter when deciding whether outpatient care is appropriate.
When an assessment may help
Seek assessment when use becomes difficult to control or affects health, work, relationships or safety. Do not attempt withdrawal from alcohol or dependence-forming medicines without medical advice.
Loss of control over quantity or frequency
Craving, tolerance or withdrawal symptoms
Repeated impact on health, family, finances or work
Unsuccessful attempts to cut down
Using substances to manage sleep, mood or anxiety
