Psychosis & Schizophrenia
Understanding the condition
Families often notice changes first. Bringing a trusted relative to the consultation can help the assessment when the person is comfortable with their involvement.
The assessment considers when changes began, physical health, sleep, mood, medicines and substance use. Information from someone familiar with the person may help, with appropriate attention to consent and confidentiality.
When an assessment may help
New hallucinations, unusual beliefs, severe confusion or a marked change in functioning need timely assessment. Immediate danger or inability to meet basic needs may require emergency care.
Hearing or seeing things others do not experience
Strong unusual beliefs or marked suspiciousness
Disorganised speech, behaviour or self-care
Social withdrawal and decline in work or studies
Major sleep change, agitation or reduced awareness of illness
